We <3 you DNN

The All Stars are playing the opening game at the Dust Devil tournament. Watch us on DNN! The game starts at 10:30am US Mountain Time, which is 3:30am Melbourne time.

It was the All Stars final “double training” session this morning at 10am. Can you tell? So in typical Melbourne style, we decided what we needed was coffee. We ran from where we train to our local cafe, with Berzerker and Pacmanda driving alongside as shouting “encouragement” and blowing whistles. Caffeinated ourselves. Then ran back. There may or may not have also been some team singing (ahem…yelling) of AC/DC’s “TNT” on the way. All coffee up, we were now ready to start training.

All Stars are ready!!!

It’s been an adventure in itself for the All Stars just preparing for our trip to the U.S. We’ve been getting super teamy and one of our favourite days was getting together to do a recovery session with the brilliant personal trainer Loris Bertolacci last Sunday. You can read about it on his blog: http://lorisbertolacci.wordpress.com/2012/04/01/vrdl-all-stars-roller-derby-do-recovery-at-advanced-athletes-performance/ We decided to do a recovery session after our last home bout as a way of beginning to taper our off skates training and really be kind to our bodies. So at 10am the day after our home bout, the All Stars were seen running through the streets of Preston, then into Loris’ gym for intervals of cycling (10mins of super sweating it out), 10mins of stretching/yoga and then 10mins of evil massages with the foam rollers and spiky ball thingies. We then headed to Northcote Pools where we preceded to do some recovery wading in the water. My big toenail may or may not have fallen off finally. Don’t worry folks at home, it was still attached to the plaster and the new one had grown back (mostly) underneath. Still managed to gross out the team though :) So while everyone else did water aerobics, I gave it my best while trying to keep my foot out of the water. Then we decided it was time for some synchronised swimming (as long as Hotrod Stacy didn’t have to put her head under the water). We choreographed an amazing team dance, and then decided what the party really needed was a human pyramid in the pool. So we did that too. Then it was time for the spa (I had long since given up on the toe staying dry), so we sat in the warm bubbly spa while Pop tried to shoot water at Bush’s head. Fun! Recovered, swam, spa’d, it was the best day ever!!!!!

Thank-you!!

On Saturday, Bz and KDC, on behalf of the Dust Devil Squad thanked and gave some cards to the league and the QB’s and fans for their (your) support; in training (pushing as hard!), in your supportive and kind words, your belief, your excitement, your pride and for all the fundraising help and financial assistance to help us get to Arizona.

All of us on the squad are so thankful and appreciative of our places, and we really hope we can do the league proud.

I know I feel that even though it’s 16 skaters + 2 benchies and some refs, that it’s actually every member of this league going over there and having a part in it. And while it’s us today, it could be YOU tomorrow, next month or next year. It’s not about sending this specific group of people over, it’s about continuing our tradition of ”firsts”, and our belief in pushing our sport further and continuing VRDL’s tradition of paving the way for roller derby in Australia.

Thank-you once again from the bottom of our hearts!
XOXO
